Voinjama City, Lofa County – A 17-year-old boy from Market Ground community attempted to take his own life while in police custody on Monday, drawing attention to the plight of vulnerable youth facing criminal charges.
The boy, identified as Tarnue Kollie, a student at Multilateral High School in Voinjama, had been arrested for allegedly stealing four ducks belonging to local resident Hannah F. Mattely. According to police sources, Kollie was apprehended around 11:00 p.m. on October 5 by residents of Selega community and handed over to authorities.
While awaiting trial in a holding cell at the Voinjama Police Station, Kollie reportedly attempted suicide. A female visitor to the Women and Children’s Office inside the station noticed the teen hanging and quickly raised an alarm. Police officers rushed to his aid, cutting him down and reviving him with water before transporting him to Tellewoyan Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Speaking after the incident, Kollie said he was overwhelmed by frustration and fear. With both of his parents currently living in Guinea, he said he felt abandoned and hopeless about his situation. He reportedly believed he could face a life sentence for the theft and saw no other escape.
Kollie’s case has since been forwarded to court for prosecution. Meanwhile, residents of Voinjama have expressed sympathy for the teenager, with some calling for increased social services and support systems for troubled youth.
Local rights advocates say the case underscores the need for mental health and social welfare interventions for young people caught up in the criminal justice system.
