PUL, Moroccan Officials Discuss Strengthening Media Capacity

The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco have initiated talks aimed at enhancing journalism and media capacity in Liberia.

According to a press release issued Tuesday, the high-level meeting was held on Friday, October 3, 2025, at the Moroccan Embassy in Sinkor, Monrovia, and focused on deepening cooperation between the two institutions.

Leading the discussions were Mr. Lahoucine Rahmouni, Chargé d’Affaires at the Moroccan Embassy, and PUL President Julius Kanubah.

The meeting follows a series of engagements between the PUL and the Moroccan diplomatic mission in recent months.

During the meeting, Mr. Rahmouni outlined a range of bilateral and investment initiatives currently spearheaded by the Moroccan Government in Liberia.

These include programs in agriculture, energy, trade, education, training, and digital empowerment—reflecting Morocco’s broader commitment to South–South cooperation and African solidarity.

Describing the discussions as “constructive and forward-looking,” PUL President Julius Kanubah expressed gratitude to the Moroccan Embassy for its continued engagement with Liberia’s media sector.

“We are grateful to Mr. Rahmouni and the Moroccan Embassy for their sustained dialogue and support,” Kanubah said. “Their participation in our recent 61st anniversary celebrations is a clear demonstration of their commitment to media development in Liberia.”

Kanubah further appealed for Morocco’s support in addressing the technical, institutional, and training gaps faced by the Liberian media—particularly in areas such as digital innovation, professional development, and media resilience.

“Liberia’s media plays a vital role in promoting democracy and accountability,” he noted. “However, we face real challenges in keeping pace with global media transformation.

Morocco’s experience in digital innovation and training presents a valuable opportunity for partnership and shared growth.”

Mr. Rahmouni reaffirmed his government’s support for Liberia’s national development priorities, including media freedom and professionalism, as outlined in the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.

The meeting was also attended by Mr. Hossain Asrouti, Counselor at the Moroccan Embassy; Ms. Estelle Liberty, Chairperson of the PUL’s Anniversary and Resource Mobilization Committee; and Mr. Edwin Clarke, Technical Advisor to the same committee.

The PUL described the discussions as “a promising step” toward forging a strategic partnership that will promote professional journalism and sustainable media growth in Liberia.

As talks continue, media observers say the collaboration could mark a turning point in modernizing Liberia’s media landscape and equipping journalists with the tools and skills needed to thrive in a digital era.
