MONROVIA – The lawyer representing former Finance Minister Samuel D. Tweah, Cllr. Arthur Johnson, has strongly criticized Criminal Court “C”‘s decision to overturn the not-guilty verdict in the high-profile corruption case, describing the ruling as a threat to Liberia’s democracy and judicial system.
Reacting to the court’s decision, the defense lawyer argued that it is unprecedented for a judge to recall or investigate jurors after they had delivered their verdict and returned to their communities.
He maintained that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain complaints or investigate the jury after it had been discharged.
The lawyer warned that the ruling sets a dangerous legal precedent and undermines confidence in the country’s justice system. The court has not publicly responded to the defense’s claims.
