Two men are feared dead and two others have been rescued following a tragic well accident that occurred during the construction of a water production project in Gbarken Community, Forpoh District, Grand Kru County.
The incident reportedly occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2026, while workers were carrying out construction activities on a newly dug well intended to support a water factory project being undertaken by a local businessman identified by residents as “Daddy.”
According to eyewitnesses, workers were preparing to install concrete pipes into the well when water unexpectedly accumulated inside the excavation site. In an effort to remove the water and continue construction, a water pump intake hose was lowered into the well.
Residents told Verity News that during the operation, four men entered or fell into the well under circumstances that remain unclear.
“We heard people shouting for help and immediately rushed to the area,” an eyewitness said. “People were trying their best to rescue those inside, but the situation was very difficult.”
Community members said two of the victims were eventually rescued alive, while two others remained trapped inside the well for several hours as rescue efforts continued.
Another resident described the scene as emotional and distressing, noting that family members and community residents gathered around the site hoping for a successful rescue.
“It was heartbreaking,” the resident said. “Everyone was praying that they would come out alive.”
As of Monday morning, residents feared that the two men who remained trapped in the well may have died, although no official confirmation had been issued by local authorities at the time of publication.
The incident has plunged Gbarken Community into mourning, with residents expressing shock and sadness over the tragedy.
Community members are also raising concerns about safety procedures at the construction site and whether adequate precautions were taken before workers entered the well.
Local authorities and community leaders are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident, including possible safety violations and the exact cause of the incident.
The identities of the victims have not yet been officially released.
