UP-Alliance Reaffirms Support for President Boakai, Condemns Opposition Threats

Monrovia, Liberia –The Unity Party Alliance (UP-Alliance), a coalition of more than a dozen political parties, has issued a statement reaffirming its steadfast support for President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s leadership while condemning threats of chaos from opposition figures.

In a statement issued on Sunday, April 27, 2025, the UP-Alliance also raised concerns over a recent ruling by the Liberian Supreme Court, which it believes could destabilize the nation’s governance.

The UP-Alliance, in its statement, addressed the Supreme Court’s April 23 ruling regarding the ongoing legislative impasse in the House of Representatives.

The ruling, which followed a Bill of Information filed by former Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, sought to clarify the Court’s December 2024 opinion. While the UP-Alliance expressed respect for the Court’s authority, it warned that the ruling could lead to a further paralysis of governance, destabilizing the legislature and, by extension, the nation.

The coalition strongly reiterated its support for President Boakai, praising his commitment to constitutional governance, democratic integrity, and national unity.

The UP-Alliance emphasized that President Boakai’s leadership is grounded in dialogue and inclusiveness, vital principles for the continued peace and development of Liberia.

“We stand unwavering in our support for President Boakai,” said the statement.

Continuing, the statement read: “His administration has always prioritized dialogue, responsible governance, and respect for the Constitution. We call on all Liberians, political actors, and institutions to rally behind him for the sake of our nation’s peace and prosperity.”

Opposition Threats Condemned

The UP-Alliance also condemned the threats issued by certain opposition figures, who, according to the coalition, have irresponsibly threatened to bring the country to a standstill should the President fail to enforce the Supreme Court’s ruling.

The UP-Alliance noted that these inflammatory threats, which the coalition described as “morally bankrupt,” were met with firm resistance from the UP-Alliance, which warned that such rhetoric could destabilize Liberia’s hard-won peace.

“The threats to ‘shut down’ Liberia through violence and unrest are completely unacceptable,” the statement read. “We will not allow these divisive tactics to undermine our democratic gains.”

Concerns Over Judicial Overreach

In addition to condemning opposition threats, the UP-Alliance raised significant concerns about judicial overreach.

The coalition pointed out that the Supreme Court’s April 23 ruling stemmed from a Bill of Information, which they argued was based on extrajudicial statements and not a formal, enforceable decision.

The coalition expressed its worry that the Court’s intervention could undermine the independence of the legislature and blur the lines between the judiciary and legislative branches.

Moreover, the UP-Alliance questioned the Supreme Court’s role in endorsing the judiciary’s financial interests, including approving salary increases and a fleet of vehicles for judicial officers, which they argued contradicted the Court’s actions on legislative matters.

“We are concerned that the Court’s recent ruling could invalidate key legislative actions, including the national budget, salary increases for civil servants and health workers, and international financial agreements vital for national development,” the statement cautioned. “Such actions could destabilize the country’s functioning and undermine constitutional governance.”

Call for National Unity and Constitutional Order

The UP-Alliance, among other things, called on all Liberians to remain united and committed to the principles of peace, democracy, and the rule of law.

The coalition reaffirmed its dedication to supporting President Boakai’s leadership and urged the Supreme Court to adhere strictly to the doctrine of separation of powers.

“We urge the Supreme Court to reconsider its recent ruling and refrain from interfering with the internal governance of the legislature,” the statement concluded. “We must all reject chaos and division, safeguarding our democracy and ensuring the continued progress of Liberia,” the statement read.

As the petition for re-argument of the case remains before the Supreme Court, the UP-Alliance reaffirmed its commitment to national unity, urging all Liberians to put the interests of the nation above political differences.

The coalition believes that under President Boakai’s leadership, Liberia will continue its march toward peace, stability, and sustainable development.

Forming part of the UP-Alliance include, All Liberian Coalition Party (ALCOP), the Grassroots Democratic Party of Liberia (GDPL), Rainbow Alliance (DJP, TWP & VCP), New Liberia Party (NLP), Movement for One Liberia (MOL), Movement for Democracy & Reconstruction (MDR), Liberia People’s Party (LPP), Liberia Restoration Party (LRP), and National Democratic Coalition (NDC).

Others include the Democratic People’s Party of Liberia (DPPL), Unity Party (UP), All Liberian Party (ALP), Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia (EFFL), United Independent Democrats (UID), African Liberation League (ALL), Greater Action Party of Liberia (GAPL), Liberia First Movement (LFM), Liberia Rebuilding Party (REBUILDERS), Grassroots Development Movement (GDM), and United Liberia Party (ULP).

The UP-Alliance said they remain focused on improving the lives of the ordinary Liberian citizens, noting that they will not be distracted by mere threats coming from the opposition community.
