GBARNGA, Bong County — The Government of Liberia, through the Bong County Administration and in collaboration with the Bong County Legislative Caucus, has broken ground for the construction of a US$250,000 Women’s Center in the Far East Community of Gbarnga.
The government-funded project is intended to provide a dedicated space for women to conduct training, empowerment programs, community activities, and other development initiatives.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Saturday, September 5, and brought together county authorities, members of the Bong County Legislative Caucus, project officials, women’s representatives, and national stakeholders, including Vice President Jeremiah Koung and House Speaker Richard Koon.
According to Thomas Cascio, an associate of the project, the initiative originated from a request by women in Bong County who appealed to Senator Prince Kermue Moye Sr. for the establishment of a dedicated women’s center.
Cascio said the proposal was subsequently reviewed and received political support from Senator Moye before being referred to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection for technical oversight and support. He said US$250,000 was approved for the project.
Speaking at the ceremony, Senator Moye described the groundbreaking as a major step toward fulfilling a long-standing commitment to women in Bong County.
He disclosed that 50 percent of tje US$250,000 (US$125,000), allocation has already been received to facilitate the commencement of construction. Senator Moye acknowledged that the project experienced earlier delays but said implementation is now fully underway.
Meanwhile, the project engineer and representatives of Safe Space Construction Company said a contractor has been selected to undertake the construction. The project is expected to be completed within one year.
The contractor has also pledged to work closely with local authorities and other stakeholders to ensure the project is implemented successfully and sustainably.
Speaking on behalf of the women, former Jorquelleh Chiefdom Paramount Chief Madam Mary Larteh expressed appreciation to Senator Moye and the government for responding to their concerns.
Larteh said the completed facility will not only serve women but will also provide a training center for women and young people seeking skills and opportunities for personal and community development.
