A violent incident reportedly erupted between residents of Kpanquoi and Dua towns in Bong County following a dispute linked to the reported drowning of a couple in the St. John River on August 27, 2026.
According to a statement from the office of Bong County Electoral District One Representative Prince K. Koinah, the incident began after Kennedy Nyah and his wife, Ruth Nyah, reportedly drowned at a nearby river crossing. Aggrieved relatives from Kpaquoi and Dua Towns allegedly staged a violent protest, resulting in several people being wounded and at least 10 houses destroyed.
The lawmaker’s office said it has intervened to help de-escalate the situation and dispatched a team, including the Chief of Staff and Administrative Officer, to support efforts to restore calm.
The Liberia National Police and local county authorities have also intervened to restore law and order. Authorities have recovered the body of Ruth Nyah, while the search for her husband, Kennedy Nyah, remains ongoing.
Representative Koinah condemned the violence and urged residents of both communities to remain calm and exercise restraint while allowing law enforcement authorities to handle the matter.
The lawmaker also pledged continued efforts to support affected residents and promote peace and security in the area.
