The Chairman of the People Living with Disabilities in Grand Bassa County, Jerry Laffy, has called for greater inclusion of persons with disabilities in employment opportunities across the county.
Mr. Laffy said he is a Christian High School graduate who has faced difficulties in pursuing higher education due to financial and other challenges.
He explained that even with educational qualifications and skills, persons with disabilities continue to face difficulties entering the job market. According to him, some employers appear to judge applicants based on their physical conditions rather than their qualifications and abilities.
Speaking to Verity News Grand Bassa County Correspondent, Mr. Laffa named Isaac J. Jimmy, Timothy G. Willie, Ruth Jebbah Willie, and university student Joseph Kortu among persons he said are qualified but have experienced challenges accessing employment opportunities.
He alleged that some job providers in Grand Bassa County have marginalized persons with disabilities when they apply for advertised vacancies.
The disability chairman is therefore calling on the national government, private institutions, and local employers to reserve opportunities for qualified persons with disabilities.
He said greater inclusion would enable them to earn a living, support their families, send their children to school, and contribute to efforts to reduce poverty in Liberia.
