Weah Extends Solidarity to Ghana on 68th Independence Anniversary

Former Liberian President George Manneh Weah has extended warm greetings to the government and people of Ghana as the country commemorates its 68th Independence Anniversary.

In a statement issued on March 6, 2025, Weah praised Ghana’s historical role as a trailblazer for African independence and unity. He described the anniversary as a testament to the “courage, resilience, and unity” of the Ghanaian people while acknowledging the enduring legacy of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in advancing self-governance across the continent.

“Ghana is a pioneer of the cause for a free and independent Africa and a champion of African solidarity,” Weah said. “I wish to thank you for honoring the sacrifice of your forefathers, including pan-Africanist Kwame Nkrumah, whose contributions to self-governance in the region remain indelible.”

The former Liberian leader also expressed gratitude for Ghana’s support during Liberia’s years of conflict, highlighting the country’s role in peacekeeping and the restoration of democracy.

“I am also reminded of Ghana’s recent expression of brotherhood to Liberia through their many contributions to the efforts of restoring peace and democracy in our country,” Weah added.

He concluded his message with best wishes for Ghana’s continued prosperity, calling the nation a “beacon of peace and democracy.”

Weah, who served as Liberia’s 24th president, maintains close ties with regional leaders and has often emphasized the importance of African unity and cooperation.

“Happy Independence Day to all Ghanaians. May God bless us all!” he said.

Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence from colonial rule on March 6, 1957, under the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah.
