Why did US embassy red card national team delegation?

By Danesius Marteh

A Liberian delegation due to travel to the United States of America for an international friendly with Minnesota United II has been denied visas.

The match was scheduled for July 26 in Minnesota as part of celebrations marking Liberia’s 179th Independence Day.

The Liberia Football Association (LFA), which initially submitted a delegation of 25 persons, reduced it to 10 persons.

Six of the 10 persons, who attended the interviews on Tuesday, were denied.

LFA Vice President Sekou Konneh (Prof.) was the only official confirmed to have received a visa.

A US embassy official, contacted via WhatsApp for details about the denials, has asked our reporter to email his concerns.

The denial of visas to the delegation may have been triggered by Nyemah Nyanway, then an LFA executive committee member, went to the United States for a football conference at the behest of the LFA in 2025 but is yet to return home.

Nyanway resigned on 16 October 2025.
