Mrs. Amira Boyidee Johnson, widow of the late Nimba County Senator Prince Y. Johnson, has emerged as a potential candidate for the upcoming senatorial by-election in Nimba County.
Her candidacy has been proposed to complete her husband’s unfinished tenure and preserve his political legacy.
During an exclusive interview over the weekend in Nimba County, Dr. Jeremiah Z. Whapoe, leader of the Vision for Liberia Transformation Party and a two-time presidential candidate, called on the people of Nimba to rally behind Mrs. Johnson.
Dr. Whapoe praised her as an educated, intelligent, and people-oriented individual capable of advancing her late husband’s vision for the county.
“There is a one-million-dollar question: who replaces Senator Johnson? I believe it should be his wife. She understands his vision better than anyone and can effectively complete his term,” Dr. Whapoe said.
Dr. Whapoe disclosed that local elders had urged him to run for the vacant seat but said he declined, stressing the importance of honoring Senator Johnson’s memory through his widow’s leadership.
He characterized the by-election as a pivotal moment for unity in Nimba and urged the county to support Mrs. Johnson. He further noted that after completing her late husband’s term, the seat would remain open for other contenders in future elections.
Addressing recent developments in the county, Dr. Whapoe downplayed the significance of a traditional ritual in which Representative Samuel Kogar was symbolically handed the county’s traditional gavel.
He clarified that the event was ceremonial and did not constitute an electoral endorsement. The Nimba political figure urged Representative Kogar to step aside should Mrs. Johnson decide to run, describing her as “the mother of Nimba.”
