Former President George Manneh Weah has strongly criticized the recent imprisonment of several lawmakers, calling the action “wrong” and “unconstitutional” during a peaceful march in solidarity with then jailed lawmakers.
Weah, who now serves as the political leader of the CDC, joined supporters and party officials in condemning what he described as the unjust arrest and detention of legislators, labeling the move a dangerous return to oppressive tactics by security forces.
“I joined them with our team in solidarity with our lawmakers. They were wrongly put into prison. Innocent people you jailed. This is wrong, unconstitutional. This is wickedness at the core,” Weah stated passionately.
Drawing parallels to past civil unrest, the former president warned that such actions by the police could reignite tensions in the country.
Koffa and three other lawmakers who were detained at South Beach are facing serious charges including arson, criminal conspiracy, criminal facilitation, and attempted murder.
The incident has sparked concerns among political observers and rights advocates, who fear the move could escalate partisan tensions and undermine democratic governance.
There has been no official comment from the police or the current administration regarding the legality of the lawmakers’ detention, but calls for accountability and due process are mounting across the political spectrum.
