Senate to Address U.S. Visa, Student Issues

The Senate Joint Committees on Foreign Affairs and Defense, Security & Intelligence will hold a critical hearing on Monday, March 17, 2025, at 2:00 PM in the Senate Chambers, to address pressing issues related to Liberia’s foreign relations.

The hearing, as stated in a Senate press release, will focus on topics including the deployment of foreign service officials, the well-being of Liberian students abroad, particularly in Morocco, and the Japanese Grant, among others.

One of the key concerns to be discussed is the recent visa restriction proposal from the U.S. Government, which could impact Liberia’s travel access if the country fails to meet security and immigration-related expectations. Senator Abraham Darius Dillon of Montserrado County, Chairman of the joint committee, confirmed that the State Broadcaster, ELBC 99.9, along with other media outlets, will provide live coverage of the hearing.

The visa restriction, a draft proposal under the Trump administration, could affect Liberia among 22 other countries if it does not address certain deficiencies in traveler information sharing, passport security, and the sale of citizenship to individuals from banned countries. If finalized, the restrictions could severely affect Liberians traveling to the U.S. for business, education, and family visits.

In addition to discussing these diplomatic concerns, the hearing will address issues raised by Liberian students in Morocco. These students, in a resolution titled “To Whom It May Concern!” have expressed deep frustration over the lack of government support since their arrival in Morocco in November 2024. They report receiving only $150 USD upon arrival, which they say was insufficient for basic living expenses. Furthermore, they claim they were promised dormitory accommodations, which were unavailable, forcing many to rent private housing at additional costs.

The students have also highlighted the financial burden caused by unexpected charges, such as residence permits and registration fees. These issues have created significant hardship, leaving students struggling to focus on their studies while worrying about their survival. In their resolution, the students are calling for immediate financial disbursements to cover their incurred expenses and a more reliable system of support for future scholarship recipients.
