Protest Leader Alleges $2,000 Bribery Attempt by ArcelorMittal Ahead of President Boakai’s Visit

The leader of the “AML Must Go” protest movement has accused ArcelorMittal Liberia of attempting to bribe him with US$2,000 in a bid to halt demonstrations ahead of President Joseph Boakai’s visit to Nimba County today.

Printiss Domah, the protest organizer, told Verity that the money was offered to persuade him to abandon the protest and leave the area. Instead, he claims he used the funds to further mobilize demonstrators.

“I refused to be silenced,” Domah said. “Our goal is not only to protest but to engage President Boakai directly and voice our community’s grievances about ArcelorMittal’s operations in the county.”

Domah characterized the alleged bribery as part of a broader campaign by the company to stifle criticism and shape public opinion in its favor. “This is not the first time ArcelorMittal has tried to use PR tactics to undermine our movement,” he added.

As President Boakai arrives in the region to officially inaugurate ArcelorMittal’s new US$1.4 billion concentrator plant in Tokadeh, tensions remain high. Protesters have vowed to continue their demonstration, demanding greater accountability and benefits for Nimba County residents.

The new plant is expected to generate over 6,000 jobs and significantly boost Liberia’s mining sector.

ArcelorMittal Liberia has not issued an official response to the bribery allegations. When contacted, the company’s communications department declined to comment.
