Justice Ministry Suspends Monrovia Central Prison Medical Coordinator Amid Alleged Bribery Scandal

The Ministry of Justice, through its Department of Rehabilitation, has indefinitely suspended Foldela Sugar Kwaidah, the Medical Coordinator at the Monrovia Central Prison, over serious allegations of soliciting bribes from inmates’ families in exchange for promises of release.

According to information obtained, Kwaidah is accused of collecting thousands of dollars from multiple families under the pretense of securing the release of their incarcerated relatives—either through Executive Clemency or medical leave.

Executive Clemency, a presidential privilege typically exercised during national holidays such as Christmas or Independence Day (July 26), was reportedly at the center of the alleged scam.

Sources within the prison confirmed that the scheme began to unravel following the most recent clemency announcement, when many inmates whose families had allegedly paid Kwaidah were not included among those released.

The discrepancy sparked outrage and led at least one family to file a formal complaint, triggering Kwaidah’s suspension.

When contacted, Assistant Minister for Rehabilitation, Atty. Gabriel F. Ndupellar, confirmed Kwaidah’s indefinite suspension but declined to comment further, citing the ongoing investigation. He noted only that she has been relieved of her duties while the matter is being investigated.

Sources close to the case claim that Kwaidah’s alleged misconduct dates back to previous administrations, during which her father served as Director of the Bureau of Corrections.

It is alleged that she used her position and family connections to solicit money in return for unfulfilled promises of clemency or temporary release.

Kwaidah’s suspension reportedly took effect two weeks ago and will remain in place as authorities probe the extent of the alleged bribery scheme.

Despite repeated requests for comment, Ms. Kwaidah has not responded to Verity Newspaper.

This publication remains committed to keeping the public informed as new developments emerge and the investigation continues.
