Margibi District #2 Representative Ivar K. Jones has accused Senator Nathaniel F. McGill of allegedly “scamming” him during the 2023 senatorial election, claiming the senator failed to support his political interest despite receiving his backing.
According to Representative Jones, he supported McGill’s bid for the Margibi County Senate seat in 2023, but McGill allegedly turned around and supported Massa Williams, a female candidate who also contested the election, against him. McGill has not responded.
Jones’ latest political alliance has, however, raised questions about whether history could repeat itself.
The District #2 lawmaker has again pledged his support to another senator, J. Emmanuel Nuquay, for the 2029 senatorial race. The development has prompted questions over whether Jones could face a similar political setback or whether the new collaboration will prove mutually beneficial.
Representative Jones is seeking a third term in the House of Representatives, which would amount to 18 years in the Legislature if successful. Senator Nuquay, meanwhile, is expected to seek a fourth term in the Senate, potentially bringing his total legislative service to 30 years.
Both Senators McGill and Nuquay have been named on the U.S. government’s sanctions list over allegations of corruption amongst other things. The sanctions have prevented them from entering the United States of America.
As the 2029 elections approach, the political partnership between Representative Jones and Senator Nuquay is likely to attract growing attention, particularly in Margibi County, where questions of political alliances, loyalty and succession are expected to shape the electoral contest.
