GRAND KRU COUNTY, Liberia — Frustrated by the prolonged impassable condition of the Chengbetee Bridge, residents and community leaders in Dorbor District have taken a community-driven step to construct a temporary floating crossing to ease the movement of people and goods.
For more than two years, the damaged bridge has reportedly created serious socioeconomic challenges for residents, marketers, and local entrepreneurs who rely on the route for daily transportation and trade.
Awaiting a permanent intervention from the central government, citizens of Dorbor District, particularly residents of Finnetoe, mobilized on August 22, 2026, to create an immediate alternative to the damaged structure.
The exercise was spearheaded by City Mayoress Ophelia Juah Wiah, who led community members, including youth and elders, in constructing the makeshift floater to facilitate local transit.
Hon. J. Abayomi Togba, a representative hopeful and local humanitarian, also joined the initiative and worked alongside residents during the exercise.
Residents say the Chengbetee Bridge serves as a major economic and transportation artery for communities in the district, and its prolonged disrepair has made the movement of people and goods increasingly difficult.
While the temporary crossing is expected to provide immediate relief, residents are calling on the central government to prioritize the construction of a permanent, modern bridge.
The community-led intervention highlights both the growing frustration over the bridge’s condition and the willingness of local residents and leaders to collectively respond to challenges affecting their daily lives.
