An officer of the Liberian National Police (LNP) has allegedly shot and killed a man following an alleged stabbing of three officers during an autocation.
Officials say the incident occurred on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, in the Congo Town community.
Police Inspector General Gregory O. W. Coleman revealed that the incident occurred when officers responded to a disturbance involving an armed man.
According to him, the officers made repeated attempt to have the armed man surrender but the victim allegedly attacked the Officer, something which led the officer to shoot.
“The officers issued several verbal orders for the suspect to lay down his weapons, but he ignored them,” Coleman said.
IG Coleman further revealed that the victim allegedly struck one officer with a cutlass, inflicting a deep arm wound as the officer shielded his head.
The other officer tussled and managed to take away the cutlass, asserting that the victim allegedly pulled out a concealed knife and stabbed the officer in the thigh.
Police described the scene as an “immediate multi-threat situation,” prompting one officer to fire his service weapon, fatally wounding the suspect to prevent further harm.
The injured officers and the victim were immediately taken to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, where one officer is said to be in critical condition and undergoing surgery.
While the suspect was later pronounced dead by medical doctors at the JFK hospital.
However, IG Coleman has expressed condolences to the victim’s family and wished the injured officers a speedy recovery.
“The Liberia National Police regrets the tragic outcome and has launched a comprehensive investigation to establish the full facts surrounding the incident,” Coleman said.
