CDC Draws the Battle Line; War of Words Escalates Over Claims of Corruption and Power Abuse

The opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has issued a strongly worded statement condemning what it describes as “deceptive and distractive tactics” by the Unity Party-led administration of President Joseph Boakai, accusing the government of corruption, economic mismanagement, and political persecution of former CDC officials.

In a release issued on Saturday, November 7, 2025, and signed by CDC National Chairman Atty. Janga A. Kowo, the party claimed the Boakai administration is using “bogus charges” against several former officials, including Nora Finda Bundoo, John S. Youboty, and Madam Thelma Duncan Sawyer (widow of the late Interim President, Dr. Amos C. Sawyer), in what it called a “calculated political witch-hunt.”

“These charges are laughable at best and will be fiercely resisted both legally and politically,” the statement said. “The concocted allegations would never withstand legal scrutiny and are the makings of a dysfunctional Asset Recovery system.”

The CDC accused the government of attempting to divert public attention from what it described as “massive governance failures,” citing declining economic growth, rising prices, and alleged misuse of public funds.

According to the release, the CDC criticized the Boakai administration for allocating over US$6.5 million “under the pretext of raising funds for its December 6 program,” calling the move “an exploitation of national resources for personal and political gains.”

The party further accused President Boakai of “irresponsible use of taxpayer money” through frequent foreign travels with large delegations, claiming the trips have yielded no tangible benefits for Liberians.

“The government has failed to reverse harmonization, free tuition, and free WASSE policies,” the statement added, “and cannot account for millions under its two-year administration.”

The CDC vowed to resist what it called the “weaponization of the courts” and warned that the Unity Party’s alleged actions could “undermine democratic stability, investor confidence, and the rule of law.”

The statement also referenced recent U.S. Department of State human rights reports, which it said highlight “serious concerns” about police brutality and executive interference in the judiciary.

The Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) called on Liberians to “remain vigilant and united” against what it described as the UP governments “orchestrated disenfranchisement.”

“Together, we must resist this orchestrated disenfranchisement and defend our democracy,” the statement read. “Our resources and our rights belong to the people of Liberia, not to an elite few seeking to line their pockets at the expense of our nation’s progress.”
