“We Are Suffering’’: Dorbor Residents Plead for Help After Chamgbetee Bridge Collapse

By Patrick Teah, Jr.

Grand Kru County — The collapse of the Chamgbetee Bridge on the Dorbor River has triggered a mounting humanitarian crisis in Dorbor District #2, leaving thousands of residents cut off from essential services and struggling to maintain daily life.

For citizens in Doeswen and surrounding communities, the situation grows more desperate by the day. According to local resident Sekagepo Cruz Wiah, the lack of a functional bridge has forced children to take unsafe detours to reach school, while sick and elderly individuals endure dangerous journeys to access health facilities. With the road officially closed, movement remains severely restricted, deepening the isolation of affected families.

Wiah said residents are calling on the government and development partners to address what they describe as an urgent need for support. The community is particularly appealing for policies that encourage inclusive education and help boost school enrollment. He added that safe drinking water and proper sanitation facilities are scarce in several towns, where the absence of pit latrines and clean water sources continues to expose residents to potential health hazards.

The crisis surrounding the Chamgbetee Bridge is not new. Statutory District Superintendent Lawrence Nyondweh earlier disclosed that community members had raised L$1.2 million to jumpstart construction. However, those efforts were halted when county authorities informed residents that the government planned to build a more durable concrete bridge instead.

In a recent update, County Development Officer Joe M. Sekpeh confirmed that the road remains officially closed as reconstruction plans advance, though little visible progress has been made on the ground.

Residents of Dorbor District are now pleading for immediate government intervention, warning that prolonged delays could worsen the hardships already faced by vulnerable households.

Mr. Wiah spoke to Verity News Online on November 26, 2025, outlining the community’s concerns and renewed call for swift action.
