Chengbetee Bridge Collapse Sparks Outcry

By Patrick Teah Jr.

The sudden collapse of the Chengbetee Bridge has sparked growing frustration among residents of Grand Kru County, who say years of neglect have culminated in the failure of a vital transportation link.

The bridge, which connected the communities of Buah and Upper Bolloh along the Geeken–Karkakpo road, served as a key route for the movement of goods, farm produce, and passengers between Grand Kru and neighboring Sinoe County.

Since the collapse, economic activity along the corridor has slowed significantly. Traders report delays and mounting financial losses, while farmers say they are struggling to transport crops to market, leading to spoilage and reduced income.

The incident has also reignited broader concerns over infrastructure neglect in areas hosting mining operations.

District Two of Grand Kru County is home to several mineral extraction sites that generate revenue through licensing fees and monthly payments. Residents are questioning why basic infrastructure such as roads and bridges were not adequately maintained despite the presence of ongoing mining activities.

Community members argue that while mining operations continue without interruption, the infrastructure relied upon by both residents and mining companies has been allowed to deteriorate.

Beyond the economic impact, the bridge collapse has disrupted access to essential services. Residents report increased difficulty in reaching healthcare facilities, schools, and emergency services due to the lack of reliable vehicle access.

Citizens are now demanding transparency regarding the management of mining-related revenues and whether infrastructure obligations linked to these operations are being properly enforced.

They are calling on the Ministry of Public Works, the Ministry of Mines and Energy, and the Grand Kru County administration to conduct an immediate assessment of the situation and present a clear rehabilitation plan.

As of press time, no official statement had been issued clarifying responsibility for the bridge’s maintenance or providing a timeline for repairs.
