Sunday Morning Tragedy in Nimba: Three Children Found Dead in Mehnla

By Jeremiah Gayflor

Mehnla Town woke up to tragedy on Sunday morning after three children were discovered dead inside their family home in an incident that has left the entire community grieving and searching for answers.

The victims — identified by residents as one girl and two boys — were found unresponsive in the house during the early morning hours. Community members described the scene as deeply distressing, with many expressing shock that such a tragedy could occur in their quiet neighborhood.

According to information gathered from local sources, the children had reportedly been left in the care of their grandmother on Saturday evening. Their mother is said to have entrusted them to her before leaving for the night. However, by dawn on Sunday, alarming reports began circulating that something had gone terribly wrong.

Compounding the mystery surrounding the children’s deaths is the unexplained disappearance of their grandmother, who was reportedly the only adult present in the home at the time of the incident. As of press time, her whereabouts remain unknown.

A local businesswoman, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation, said the community was thrown into confusion when word of the children’s deaths spread.

“People started gathering outside the house early this morning. Nobody could believe what they were hearing,” she said. “We are all in shock. These are children we see playing every day.”

Residents quickly mobilized, forming small search groups to look for the missing grandmother in nearby areas. Tensions ran high as speculation spread, but community leaders urged residents to remain calm and allow authorities to conduct their investigation.

Officers of the Liberia National Police arrived at the scene shortly after being alerted and cordoned off the area. Police confirmed that a full-scale investigation has been launched to determine the cause and circumstances of the children’s deaths. The bodies have reportedly been removed from the home pending medical examination.

Authorities have not yet released an official statement detailing preliminary findings, nor have they confirmed whether foul play is suspected. Police have also indicated that efforts are ongoing to locate the missing grandmother, who may be a key figure in understanding what transpired.

The tragedy has cast a dark cloud over Mehnla Town, particularly as it occurred just one day after members of the Dorliea family gathered in the community to honor their mother, Ma Hawa Dorliea. What was meant to be a time of remembrance has now turned into a period of profound mourning.

Many residents spent Sunday gathered in small groups, offering comfort to one another and reflecting on the devastating loss of three young lives.

“This is not something we are used to here,” one elder said. “We are praying for the family and for the truth to come out.”

As Mehnla Town awaits further updates from authorities, the community remains gripped by grief, holding on to hope that clarity and justice will emerge from an incident that has shaken it to its core.
