Gov’t Clarifies Status of $150,000 Found with Drugs at Bo Waterside, says it was deposited at Central Bank

Monrovia, Liberia — The Minister of Information has confirmed that the $150,000 United States dollars discovered in a vehicle along with illegal drugs at the Bo Waterside border has been deposited at the Central Bank of Liberia.

According to the minister, the cash was recovered during an operation conducted by the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) at the Bo Waterside border crossing in Grand Cape Mount County.

He said the money did not disappear, contrary to claims circulating on social media. Instead, the minister explained that the funds are now safely kept at the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) as part of the ongoing investigation.

Authorities reported that LDEA officers intercepted a vehicle suspected of transporting illegal drugs at the Bo Waterside border. During the search, officers allegedly discovered narcotics along with $150,000 in cash inside the vehicle.

However, the situation has sparked public discussion following the circulation of an audio recording on social media. In the recording, a voice believed to be that of a customs officer reportedly claims the cash was not declared at the time the drugs were seized by the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency.

Government officials have not yet provided further details regarding the audio recording or the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the money.

The incident occurred recently at the Bo Waterside crossing, Liberia’s main border entry point with neighboring Sierra Leone. Authorities say investigations into the drug seizure and the origin of the cash are ongoing.
