In his opening remarks at the Senate’s 45th Sitting of the 3rd Session of the 55th Legislature, Senator Gbehzohngar Milton Findley made a strong case for abolishing expiration dates on mobile data and call credit sold by GSM companies in Liberia.
He urged the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) to make sure consumers can use what they have paid for without being rushed by a deadline. He also warned that if the telecoms operators refuse to comply, the Senate will consider legislation to make the policy mandatory.
The senator further proposed that part of the 2% deduction on mobile money transactions be set aside in an escrow account to fund the rehabilitation of public facilities and community centers across the country. In his view, these measures would show a real commitment to protecting consumers, advancing social welfare, and supporting national development.
Liberian mobile users have long been frustrated that unused airtime and data bundles vanish at expiry with no refund, even though subscribers have already paid for them.
