Established on October 3, 1973 through the Mano River Declaration, the Mano River Union (MRU) is a subregioinal bloc that was founded to promote peace, unity, economic integration, and solidarity among member States. Liberia and Sierra Leone are founding members (1973). Guinea joined in 1980 while Ivory Coast joined in 2008.
