Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon is facing mounting criticism following allegations of inappropriate conduct during a recent International Women’s Day event organized by the Liberty Party.
The Senator is accused of engaging in behavior widely described as demeaning toward a woman at the gathering, reportedly asking her to turn around, making physical contact, and placing money on her in full public view. The incident, which occurred in a setting intended to celebrate women’s achievements and advocate for gender equality, has raised serious concerns about respect and leadership conduct.
Gender advocate Joyce Laykah Kilikpo has strongly condemned the alleged actions, describing them as “shameful and sad,” and inconsistent with the values International Women’s Day represents. In a public statement, she argued that such behavior reflects a troubling pattern of objectification of women, particularly Black women.
Kilikpo drew historical parallels to the exploitation of Sarah Baartman, noting that while contexts may have evolved, the underlying harm remains evident when women are treated as objects for public display.
“When a sitting Senator publicly commands a woman to turn around, touches her, and places money on her while others look on, it raises serious questions about what has truly changed,” she stated.
She further emphasized that the incident undermines the core purpose of International Women’s Day, which is to promote dignity, equality, and respect for women across all sectors of society.
The advocate also called on the leadership of the Liberty Party, including Political Leader Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, to issue a formal apology and ensure accountability, warning that failure to act could erode public confidence.
As of press time, Senator Dillon has not publicly responded to the allegations.
