Monrovia, Liberia — The Liberia National Union (LINU) has formally endorsed Mr. Jonathan Weedor as Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), following his recent nomination by Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr.
In a statement issued Tuesday, LINU commended Weedor for his integrity, patriotism, and extensive experience in public service. The party emphasized his 16-year tenure at the NEC, including his role as Co-Chair, noting that his deep institutional knowledge positions him as the most qualified candidate to lead the electoral body.
The endorsement comes just days after President Boakai announced Weedor’s nomination, a move that has drawn criticism from opposition political parties, including the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) and the Citizens Movement for Change (CMC). Critics argue that the nomination reflects political favoritism toward the ruling Unity Party.
However, Clarence K. Moniba, Political Leader of LINU, defended the nomination, stressing the urgency of strong leadership at the NEC.
“The NEC faces significant challenges, and strong, credible leadership is needed now more than ever,” Moniba said. “Elections serve as the foundation of Liberia’s development, and Mr. Weedor’s commitment to the nation will strengthen the Commission.”
Moniba acknowledged that while many Liberians are qualified to serve, Weedor stands out as the best candidate at this critical time. He urged the Liberian Senate to expedite the confirmation process to ensure stability and continuity within the electoral body.
LINU reaffirmed its commitment to supporting leadership that enhances Liberia’s democratic institutions, expressing confidence that Weedor’s appointment would reinforce public trust in the electoral system.
