Koijee Warns of Consequences if Boakai Refuses to Leave Office After 2029 Elections

By Archie Ayouba Boan

Monrovia, Liberia — The Secretary General of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), Jefferson Tamba Koijee, has sparked controversy following remarks suggesting severe consequences if President Joseph Boakai does not relinquish power after the October 2029 elections.

Speaking on a local radio station in Monrovia, Koijee asserted that the CDC would ensure Boakai’s removal from office should he be defeated at the polls.

“We will make President Boakai a former leader of the country. He will not spend one minute in office after October 10. Not one minute he will spend there,” Koijee said during the broadcast.

He went further to issue a stark warning: “Anything short of that, he will be a citizen of the cemetery.”

The comments have raised concerns among political observers and civil society groups, who warn that such rhetoric could heighten political tensions in the country as it approaches the 2029 electoral cycle.

Liberia has experienced periods of political instability in the past, and stakeholders have consistently called for peaceful democratic processes and respect for constitutional order, particularly during elections and transitions of power.

There has been no immediate response from the office of President Boakai regarding Koijee’s remarks.

Analysts say the statement underscores the increasingly charged political atmosphere and have urged leaders across the spectrum to exercise restraint and promote dialogue in the interest of national stability.
