The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Public Works, has commenced the demolition of structures along the Barclayville–Sasstown 50-kilometer road corridor.
The exercise, which began on April 28, 2026, affects several communities including Nrokia, Wessah, and Daryokpo where about 100 homes have already been demolished. The demolition is part of efforts to pave the way for the long-awaited road construction project.
Despite the emotional toll on affected residents, many citizens have expressed support for the initiative, citing the long-term development benefits. The government had earlier provided resettlement compensation to property owners ahead of the demolition.
The road project, funded by the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), was negotiated during the administration of former President George Weah and is now being implemented under President Joseph Boakai.
Speaking to Verity Online News, one local elder praised the government for honoring its commitment to compensate affected residents prior to the demolition.
“We were informed ahead of time, and the government made the payments. This is not a strange process—development comes with sacrifices, and we must be willing to endure them,” the elder said.
The Barclayville–Sasstown road project is expected to significantly improve transportation, boost economic activities, and enhance connectivity across southeastern Liberia.
