Monrovia — The Ministry of Commerce & Industry (MoCI) has announced a nationwide ban on sidewalk and roadside selling, directing that all commercial activities be conducted strictly within stores and shops effective today, May 1.
In a public notice issued Wednesday, the Ministry said the measure is part of ongoing efforts to restore order in commercial areas, improve public safety, and ensure the free movement of pedestrians.
According to the Ministry, there has been a growing concern over the widespread display of goods on sidewalks, roadways, and other unauthorized public spaces. Officials say these practices have contributed to congestion, increased safety risks, and general disorder in business districts across the country.
The Ministry emphasized that, under its statutory mandate to regulate commerce and trade, no goods or merchandise will be allowed to be displayed or stored outside designated business premises.
Enforcement of the new directive will begin on Monday, May 4, 2026, in collaboration with relevant agencies. Authorities have warned that businesses found in violation will face strict penalties, including the immediate removal and confiscation of goods displayed outside shops.
Other penalties include fines and administrative sanctions, as well as the temporary or permanent closure of non-compliant businesses. In some cases, violators may also face legal action in accordance with Liberia’s laws and regulatory framework.
Despite the strict measures, the Ministry clarified that the directive is not intended to stifle economic activity. Instead, it aims to create a more organized, safe, and enabling environment for both businesses and the public.
