Liberia to Enforce Reserved Business Law for Citizens

By Verity News Contributor

The Liberian Government says it will begin strict enforcement of the country’s Liberianization policy, a law that reserves certain business activities exclusively for Liberian citizens.

Speaking during a meeting with local manufacturers and distributors on Wednesday, Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung said the enforcement process will begin within the next 30 days.

Under the policy, Liberians will have exclusive rights to distribute locally manufactured products and operate in several business sectors protected by law.

The announcement followed ongoing consultations between the Vice President and local business stakeholders focused on increasing Liberian participation in the economy.

During the discussions, concerns were raised that some Liberians are allegedly allowing foreign nationals to use their names to operate businesses reserved for citizens.

Officials warned that such practices defeat the purpose of the policy and limit opportunities for genuine Liberian-owned enterprises.

Several Liberian-owned businesses, including Jungle Water, Bill Delamou Trading, and Exodus Entertainment Center, expressed readiness to handle the distribution of locally produced goods across the country.

Business representatives said they have the capacity and resources to maintain steady supply networks and support Liberian-owned retailers nationwide.

Stakeholders also called for stronger monitoring measures to prevent foreign-owned businesses from bypassing the law through proxy arrangements.

Participants agreed to expand consultations to include producers, manufacturers, and distributors in order to develop a coordinated distribution system that will support market stability and strengthen local businesses.

Speaking recently on the state broadcaster ELBC, Vice President Koung reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fully implementing the policy to ensure Liberians benefit from protected business opportunities.
