Monrovia, Liberia — Officers of the Liberia National Police have arrested several suspects allegedly connected to a public harassment incident involving a woman in the Red Light commercial area, authorities confirmed on Saturday.
According to a police statement, the suspects are being investigated for their alleged involvement in an incident in which a woman was reportedly body shamed, verbally abused, and physically assaulted in public. The incident, which has sparked widespread public outrage on social media and within local communities, reportedly occurred on Thursday in the busy Red Light area of Paynesville.
The police said officers responded after videos and eyewitness accounts of the incident began circulating online, prompting calls for swift action and accountability.
“The Liberia National Police has launched a full-scale investigation into the matter, and individuals believed to have participated in the harassment and assault have been taken into custody,” the statement noted.
Authorities did not immediately disclose the identities of the suspects or the exact number of persons arrested, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Community members and rights advocates have condemned the incident, describing it as an attack on the dignity and safety of women in public spaces.
Several citizens have also urged authorities to ensure that all those responsible are prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Meanwhile, the LNP has appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while the investigation continues.
Police say additional arrests may follow as investigators review video evidence and interview witnesses connected to the incident.
The condition of the victim was not immediately known as of press time.
