Lawyers representing former Finance Minister Samuel D. Tweah have challenged the court’s ongoing investigation into alleged jury tampering, arguing that the jurors had already been disbanded following their verdict in the high-profile corruption case.
Lead defense lawyer Cllr. Arthur Johnson questioned why jurors are now being investigated for alleged bribery after they were officially released by the court following a verdict acquitting Tweah.
“The laws of this country are clear, and the laws remain on our side. The laws cannot be changed because of Samuel Tweah,” Johnson declared.
He further described the investigation as a “witch-hunt,” accusing the Executive Branch of having a vested interest in ensuring Tweah is imprisoned over the alleged US$6.2 million corruption case.
“This is no longer a secret. The government is manipulating the case to overturn the verdict,” Johnson alleged.
The defense lawyer also warned that Tweah’s legal team is prepared to take the matter before the Supreme Court if necessary.
The court’s investigation follows allegations from some jurors who claimed that colleagues may have been influenced or bribed during deliberations. Authorities have yet to publicly respond to the accusations raised by Tweah’s defense team.
