Anthony Laffor Defends George Weah, Says “He Was President of Liberia, Not of Football”

Former Lone Star captain Anthony Snoti Laffor has strongly defended former Liberian President and football icon George Weah, describing him as a “king” and insisting that his leadership should be judged in the national political context rather than within football administration.

In a statement shared publicly, Laffor praised Weah for his contributions to Liberian football during his playing career, while distancing him from expectations tied to football governance.

“Only one king and the greatest of all. You can disrespect him and call him names. In my opinion, he has done well for football,” Laffor wrote.

He added that Weah should not be assessed as a former sports administrator or Liberia Football Association (LFA) leader, emphasizing that his role in public service was national leadership.

“He was never a sports minister / LFA president. In his playing days he helped a lot of Liberians including me, Ben Teekloh and others. He was the President for Liberia, not for football,” he stated.

Laffor also questioned critics, particularly former teammates from the famous “Weah 11” group, asking why grievances dating back to the early 2000s were only now being raised.

The remarks have sparked renewed discussion among football fans and former players over Weah’s legacy in both sports and politics, as debates continue about the intersection of football fame and national leadership in Liberia.
