Environmentalist Criticizes City Mayor, Postal and Rail Ministers on World Environment Day

MONROVIA – Liberian environmentalist Borwen Buku-Levi Sayon has sharply criticized government officials responsible for sanitation, postal services, and rail transportation, accusing them of failing to deliver on their mandates while continuing to receive salaries and budgetary support.

In a statement issued on World Environment Day, Sayon questioned the performance of the Mayor of the Monrovia City Corporation, citing the presence of large piles of garbage across the capital and its surrounding communities.

“We have mountains of dirt in the central town and suburbs, with city authorities refusing to clear them. But yet, the City Mayor goes to bed peacefully,” he stated.

Sayon also criticized the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, noting that Liberia still lacks a fully functional postal code system and efficient postal services despite annual budget allocations.

Turning to the transport sector, he faulted the Ministry of Railways for what he described as the continued deterioration of rail infrastructure. According to him, mining companies are transporting iron ore by trucks rather than rehabilitating rail lines within their concession areas.

The environmental advocate argued that the issues reflect weak accountability and called for greater commitment from public officials to address longstanding national challenges.
