In an official communication forwarded to Senate Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence and members of the 55th National Legislature, the former VP expressed deep frustration and concern over what she termed as the prolonged failure of the government to honor its legal obligations to her, following the completion of her tenure as Vice President of Liberia.
The former Vice President noted that she has not been paid pension benefits for more than two and the half years since leaving office in January 2024, despite meeting all statutory requirements inscribed in the pension laws of Liberia.
What does the pension laws of Liberia say about pension benefit for a former Vice President?
Section 1.4.2 of the June 2010 Pension Laws (Non-Contributory Pension Scheme): “A former Vice President who has honorably been retired to private life and who is not in any way employed by the Government shall receive from the Government 50% of the Salary of the Incumbent Vice President. In addition, the former Vice President shall be entitled to personal staff and facilities. The allowance allowed for this purpose shall not be less than US$15,000 per annum.”
The law is attached.
