Newborn Baby Found Dead in River Gee Creek; Residents Demand Investigation

By Ben TC Brooks

Residents of the Supergarrie Community in Fish-Town are demanding answers after the body of a newborn baby boy was discovered in Nehsinmehn Creek, sparking shock and sadness across the area.

The infant’s body was found on Friday, June 12, by a group of young men who regularly wash motorcycles and vehicles at the creek. According to eyewitnesses, the baby was floating face down in the water when he was discovered.

Residents said the child appeared to be only a day old. The umbilical cord was reportedly still attached, and blood stains were visible on parts of the infant’s body, suggesting he had been born shortly before being abandoned.

Nehsinmehn Creek is located less than a kilometer from the entrance of Fish-Town and about three kilometers from the county referral hospital along the Zwedru-Kanweaken Highway.

Speaking to reporters, Kelvin B. Toe Jr., a longtime motorcycle and car washer at the creek, described the discovery as something the community had never experienced before.

“We have spent years washing vehicles here, and nothing like this has ever happened,” Toe said. “One of our friends, Othello, went downstream to retrieve a bar of soap that had fallen into the water. When he looked closely, he saw what appeared to be a baby and immediately called us. We were all shocked and saddened by what we saw.”

Following the discovery, residents alerted the Liberia National Police in River Gee County. Officers from the Criminal Services Division later visited the scene and gathered preliminary information.

According to community members, police advised the Fish-Town City Corporation to remove the body and arrange for burial. However, residents expressed frustration that city authorities had not responded promptly after being notified.

As of the time this report was filed, residents said the infant’s body remained in the creek as responsibility for its removal appeared to be unresolved between local authorities and law enforcement.

The incident has raised serious concerns throughout Fish-Town, with many residents calling for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

Community members are also questioning how a newborn baby could have been abandoned so close to the county’s main healthcare facility.

No individual or family has publicly reported a missing newborn, adding to the mystery surrounding the case.

Residents are now urging the Liberia National Police, health authorities, and local government officials to conduct a thorough investigation, identify those responsible, and ensure justice for the child.

As the community mourns, many are left asking the same question: How did a newborn baby end up abandoned in a creek, and who is responsible?
