Representatives from ArcelorMittal say they spent US$67,000 to renovate the Taye Town Hall, but Community Leaders reject renovation expenditure

By Emmanuel Kamanda

In a meeting with local residents, including leaders, of Neekreen Statutory District in Grand Bassa County, Representatives from Liberia’s iron ore giant ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) said a whopping US$67,000 was spent to rehabilitate the Taye Town Hall, almost two times the total amount spent to build it.

Neekreen District Superintendent Michael Vambram and other local leaders expressed serious shock and disbelief, terming such amount as “too high of a renovation cost to believe.”

“Why would repairs cost far more than the total cost to build the original building,” a local leader questioned ArcelorMittal.

The Chief Executive Officer of Fair Deal Construction Company, Jerry Garyeagar, who first constructed the town hall, said the total money they spent to build the hall in 2010 was a little over US$37,000.
