MONROVIA – A first judicial circuit court at the temple of justice in Monrovia has denied a request by former Commerce and Industry Minister, Mawine Diggs, to travel abroad for medical treatment while she faces prosecution in an ongoing corruption case involving millions of dollars intended for rural women empowerment programs.
Diggs is among eight individuals indicted by a grand jury in connection with the alleged misappropriation of approximately US$493,669.38 and LRD$190,345,028.26 from the Rural Women Empowerment Funds.
The defendants are facing multiple charges, including theft of property, economic sabotage, misapplication of entrusted property, and criminal conspiracy.
Court records indicate that Diggs sought permission to travel overseas for medical attention. However, the court rejected the request, requiring her to remain in Liberia as legal proceedings continue.
The case has attracted significant public attention due to the large amount of money allegedly diverted from programs intended to support rural women across the country.
Authorities continue to pursue the matter as prosecutors seek to prove the allegations against the accused, while the defendants remain entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law.
