LNP Warns Against Unauthorized Use of Police Uniforms, Insignia

The Liberia National Police (LNP) has warned members of the public against the unauthorized use of police uniforms, badges, insignia and other official identifiers, saying such acts violate the law and could result in criminal prosecution.

In a statement issued Thursday, June 18, 2026, the LNP said it has observed cases involving the improper use of police uniforms and insignia, including in online content and public displays.

“The LNP reminds the public that police uniforms and insignia are official symbols of lawful authority and public trust. Their unauthorized use may create public confusion, undermine confidence in law enforcement institutions, and facilitate unlawful conduct, including the impersonation of police officers,” the statement said.

The police cited Section 22.98 of the Liberia National Police Act and Regulations, which prohibits any person from wearing or displaying police uniforms, badges, insignia or falsely presenting themselves as members of the force without written authorization from the Inspector General of Police.

According to the LNP, the unauthorized use of police uniforms, insignia, or related police identifiers constitutes a violation of Liberian law and may result in criminal liability.

The police further warned that people who impersonate officers or falsely claim police authority not only violate the law but also jeopardize public safety and erode trust in legitimate law enforcement operations.

The LNP said it will investigate all credible reports involving the unauthorized use of police uniforms and related items and “will take appropriate enforcement action where sufficient legal grounds exist.”

The statement also urged content creators, entertainers, event organizers, businesses and the general public to refrain from using police uniforms or police-related identifiers without approval from the Inspector General of Police.

Members of the public were encouraged to report suspected cases of police impersonation or unauthorized use of police uniforms and insignia to the nearest police station or through official reporting channels.

“The Liberia National Police remains committed to safeguarding public trust, preserving the integrity of its institution, and ensuring compliance with the laws of the Republic of Liberia,” the statement concluded.
