Maryland County — The Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) has launched its 2026 recruitment exercise in Harper City, Maryland County, as part of a nationwide effort to strengthen the country’s military and enhance national security.
Hundreds of young people from across Maryland County turned out for the exercise, reflecting growing interest among Liberians in serving in the armed forces. Applicants participated in an aptitude test, one of several screening stages designed to assess academic readiness, reasoning skills, and suitability for military training.
Military authorities said the recruitment drive aims to build a more professional, disciplined, and inclusive force with representation from all regions of Liberia. Candidates will undergo additional assessments, including physical fitness evaluations, medical examinations, and background checks before final selection.
Officials overseeing the exercise emphasized that transparency, fairness, and merit remain central to the recruitment process.
Many applicants described the opportunity as more than a path to employment, viewing military service as a chance to contribute to national peace, security, and development while gaining discipline and leadership skills.
Community leaders in Maryland County welcomed the exercise, calling it an important opportunity for young people in southeastern Liberia to participate in national service.
The recruitment drive comes amid ongoing efforts to strengthen Liberia’s security institutions. Authorities say expanding the AFL is a strategic step toward building a modern and capable military force dedicated to protecting the nation’s territorial integrity and constitutional order.
