Sen. McGill Launches LRD 2.6 Million Academic Fund for Margibi Students at UL

MONROVIA, Liberia — Margibi County Senator Nathaniel F. McGill has launched a LRD 2.6 million educational assistance program aimed at supporting students from Margibi County enrolled at the University of Liberia.

The initiative, known as the Margibi Academic Support Assistance Fund (MASAF), was announced during a meeting between Senator McGill and members of the Margibi Students Association at his Capitol Building office on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.

The senator disclosed that an initial payment of LRD 500,000 has already been deposited into the University of Liberia account designated for Margibi students.

According to Senator McGill, the fund will become operational in the next academic semester and is intended to provide financial assistance to deserving undergraduate students from the county.

Speaking at the launch, McGill, who chairs the Senate Committee on Education and Public Administration, emphasized the importance of investing in the county’s youth.

“I want to help the students of Margibi County. In the next few years, you will be the leaders of this county and this country. This fund is only the beginning, and there will be more support and opportunities for Margibi students,” he said.

The senator also reflected on his own struggles as a student at the University of Liberia in 1995, recalling how support from former President George M. Weah helped him continue his education. He encouraged students to remain committed to their studies and pledged to sustain the assistance fund throughout his tenure in public service.

Representatives of the Margibi Students Association welcomed the initiative and praised the senator for his commitment to education.

Margibi Students Union Vice President Oretha A. Taylor and President Favor A. Stewart expressed appreciation on behalf of the student body, describing the fund as a significant step toward easing the financial burden faced by many students from the county.

They assured Senator McGill that the program would be administered with transparency and accountability to ensure that deserving beneficiaries receive the support.

The Margibi Academic Support Assistance Fund is expected to benefit more than 500 students each semester and will be managed by the Margibi Students Association.
