Grand Gedeh County – Former President George Manneh Weah, speaking via Zoom from the United States, declared that the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) is united and preparing to return to power in the 2029 general elections, while accusing the Unity Party-led government of democratic backsliding and economic mismanagement.
Addressing supporters during the CDC’s 22nd Anniversary and Militants Day celebration in Zwedru on Saturday, Weah described the party as a grassroots movement that transformed Liberia’s political landscape by empowering ordinary citizens.
The former President thanked leaders of several opposition parties, including the Alternative National Congress (ANC), Citizens Movement for Change (CMC), National Patriotic Party (NPP), All Liberian Party (ALP), and Movement for Progressive Change (MPC), for attending the celebration, saying their presence reflected growing opposition solidarity.
Weah accused President Joseph Boakai’s administration of failing to deliver on its “Rescue Mission” promises, alleging political persecution, disregard for the rule of law, worsening economic hardship, and insecurity. He also alleged that the government has shielded officials linked to drug trafficking and undermined democratic institutions.
Calling for unity ahead of the 2029 elections, Weah urged CDC partisans and the broader opposition to begin mobilizing nationwide.
“The road to 2029 begins today,” he declared, insisting that the CDC remains “alive, united, organized and energized” and is ready for its next chapter.
