Highway to Nowhere: Collapsed Toe Town–Tappita Road Leaves Dozens of Vehicles Stranded for Over a Week

By D. Abraham Cooper Sr.

TOE TOWN, Grand Gedeh County – Dozens of commercial and private vehicles have been stranded for more than a week along the Toe Town–Tappita highway as worsening road conditions continue to cripple transportation and expose the deteriorating state of Liberia’s road infrastructure.

A Verity News investigation found that deep mud, severely damaged sections of the road, and impassable conditions have brought traffic to a standstill, leaving motorists, passengers, and transport operators trapped with limited access to food, shelter, and essential services.

Speaking to Verity News, tanker driver Keita Barry described the situation as frustrating and unsustainable, saying many drivers have been forced to remain on the highway for days while hoping conditions improve.

“The condition of this road is getting worse every day. Even though it is not as terrible as it was between 2018 and 2023, it remains a serious challenge for motorists and transport operators,” Barry said.

According to Barry, the prolonged delays have driven up transportation costs, disrupted the movement of goods, and contributed to fuel shortages in some communities. He noted that stranded drivers are also facing severe hardships due to inadequate food supplies and the lack of proper shelter.

Barry appealed to the Government of Liberia, particularly the Ministry of Public Works and other relevant authorities, to urgently rehabilitate the highway before conditions worsen.

Residents and motorists have also voiced concern that the continued neglect of the Toe Town–Tappita road could further isolate communities across southeastern Liberia, slow economic activities, and hinder access to markets, healthcare, and other essential services.

They are calling on the government to immediately begin rehabilitation works to restore safe and reliable access along the vital highway, which serves as a key transportation corridor connecting Grand Gedeh County to other parts of the country.
