Liberian Senate Summons CSA Boss and RRE Boss over Statements Against The Senate

Monrovia -Tuesday July 7, 2026; The Liberian Senate has with immediate effect summoned two (2) senior government officials to appear before its Committee of the Whole following public statements deemed disrespectful and derogatory toward the Senate.

During its regular sitting on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, the Senate Plenary unanimously agreed to summon the Director-General of the Civil Service Agency, Mr. Josiah Joekai, and the Director-General of the Rural and Renewable Energy Agency, Mr. Samuel Nagbe, to provide explanations regarding comments they allegedly made against the Liberian Senate.

The Senate decision follows a formal complains from Bomi County Senator Edwin M. Snowe Jr. requesting that the two Government officials appear to explain why they made derogatory statements against the Senate.

Accordingly, both officials are expected to appear before the Senate Committee of the Whole on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. to clarify their respective statements and respond to concerns raised by members of the Senate.

The decision followed discussions among Senators, who emphasized the need to preserve the dignity and integrity of the Legislature while promoting mutual respect among the three branches of government.

Several Senators maintain that public officials have a responsibility to conduct themselves in a manner that upholds democratic values and strengthens confidence in state institutions.

Plenary noted that while freedom of expression remains a constitutional right, government officials are also expected to exercise restraint and professionalism in their public remarks, particularly when addressing constitutionally established institutions.

The Committee of the Whole hearing is expected to provide an opportunity for both Mr. Joekai and Mr. Nagbe to explain the context of their statements and respond to questions from Senators.

The outcome of the hearing could determine whether the Senate will take further actions or consider the matter resolved.
