Grand Kru County is being positioned to play a leading role in Liberia’s livestock industry, as the Ministry of Agriculture continues community consultations ahead of the rollout of the government’s planned cattle development project.
A high-level delegation from the Ministry, led by Deputy Minister for Technical Services Solomon Hedd-Williams, on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, engaged residents, local authorities, traditional leaders, and livestock farmers in Picnicess to discuss the project and assess community readiness.
The engagement forms part of a broader county-wide assessment following Grand Kru’s selection as the livestock hub for southeastern Liberia.
Deputy Minister Hedd-Williams said the county’s favorable conditions and agricultural potential make it strategically suited for large-scale cattle development. He said the initiative is intended to increase domestic meat production, strengthen food security, reduce reliance on imported meat, and create employment and income opportunities for local farmers.
He called on residents to take ownership of the project and work closely with the Ministry to ensure that the initiative delivers sustainable benefits to communities.
Residents of Picnicess welcomed the planned investment, saying the cattle project could open new economic opportunities for farmers and young people while contributing to household incomes and the county’s agricultural growth.
Grand Kru County Superintendent Antoinette Worwelee Nimely also welcomed the initiative, describing the county’s selection as a regional livestock hub as an opportunity to transform agriculture and expand economic activities.
Superintendent Nimely urged citizens to protect and support the project, stressing that community participation and ownership will be critical to ensuring its long-term success.
