The National Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed support for the Government of Liberia’s ongoing fight against drug trafficking while calling for an impartial and speedy trial of its Standard Bearer, former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor.
In an official statement, the NPP acknowledged Taylor’s arrest and the charges reportedly brought against her, including allegations of money laundering and other related offenses.
The party said it respects the government’s efforts to combat illicit drugs and dismantle trafficking networks, pledging its cooperation with the ongoing investigation in keeping with the rule of law.
However, the NPP raised concerns over the manner of Taylor’s arrest, arguing that authorities should have considered her former constitutional position and the circumstances surrounding the case. The party said a telephone call or formal written notice could have been used instead of what it described as an unnecessarily harsh arrest.
The NPP also urged the government to consider house arrest or another appropriate custodial arrangement for Taylor, particularly to allow her access to necessary medical care while ensuring her appearance at court proceedings.
The party stressed that while serious criminal allegations must be investigated and prosecuted, the rights, dignity, health, and well-being of accused persons must be protected under Liberian law.
The NPP is therefore calling for a fair and speedy trial, giving Taylor the opportunity to defend herself and, if warranted, clear her name.
The party also urged its partisans and supporters to remain calm and peaceful, while its Executive Committee prepares to deliberate on the matter and consider further legal options.
