MONROVIA, Liberia — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. has vowed to intensify Liberia’s fight against illicit drugs and organized crime, insisting that the law must apply equally to all citizens regardless of political affiliation, public office or social status.
Addressing the nation Wednesday evening, President Boakai said his administration would neither persecute nor shield anyone because of political influence, emphasizing that guilt or innocence must be determined by the courts.
His remarks come amid heightened attention surrounding the arrest and detention of former Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor. Boakai said Taylor is presumed innocent, has access to legal counsel and is entitled to due process.
The President rejected claims that the government’s anti-drug campaign targets particular individuals or political groups, describing it instead as a national security and moral effort to protect Liberia’s future.
He said security institutions have been instructed to act professionally, independently and without fear or favor while working with national and international partners to combat narcotics trafficking, money laundering and organized crime.
Boakai also urged citizens, political and religious leaders, civil society groups and public commentators to reject misinformation and avoid actions that could incite violence or undermine national institutions.
He linked the anti-drug campaign to his broader commitment to the rule of law under the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.
