MONROVIA, Liberia — Gbarpolu County Senator Amara Mohammed Konneh has called on the Minister of Justice and the Inspector General of Police to publicly release procurement and ownership records for vehicles purchased from the United States and the Netherlands amid the ongoing cocaine trafficking controversy.
Senator Konneh said rumors surrounding police vehicles purchased from Minnesota, luxury SUVs acquired for government officials and vehicles allegedly registered to private individuals require clarification.
In a statement, the senator urged the task force handling the cocaine investigation to publish what he described as a comprehensive “press pack” containing key government records.
He specifically requested documentation showing Public Procurement and Concessions Commission (PPCC) approval for vehicles purchased with government funds, General Services Agency (GSA) asset registration records, Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) payment vouchers and Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) duty waivers.
Konneh argued that releasing the documents would help establish whether the vehicles are government property and address questions surrounding their procurement and use.
“If the cars are GOL property, the documents will exonerate the police, build their credibility, and strengthen the cocaine case,” he said.
However, he warned that if the records do not support government ownership, authorities should address the matter immediately to prevent defense lawyers from using the discrepancies to challenge the ongoing cocaine prosecution.
His call comes amid heightened public scrutiny of Liberia’s handling of the major narcotics investigation.
