Monrovia, Liberia — The Liberian Nurses Association (LNA) is calling for a significant increase in nurses’ salaries, following the government’s announcement that domestic revenue collection has surpassed US$1 billion.
The Association says nurses should directly benefit from the government’s increased revenue, demanding that no nurse receive less than US$500 beginning with the next national budget year.
“Now that the government has raised 1B in revenue, it’s time for nurses to feel the practical impact. Nurses will not accept a salary below USD $500, beginning next budget year,” the LNA said.
The Association warned that it will intensify engagements with relevant authorities to push for the proposed salary increase.
“We will intensify engagements, and vigorously too,” the nurses added.
The demand comes as President Joseph Nyuma Boakai celebrates what his administration describes as a historic milestone in domestic revenue collection, surpassing US$1 billion without borrowing or foreign aid.
The nurses’ call is expected to add pressure on government as discussions surrounding the allocation of increased domestic revenue and public-sector compensation continue.
